WASHINGTON (Army News Service, July 9, 2014) -- Marksmen throughout the Department of Defense are competing this week in the 53rd Annual Interservice Rifle Championship at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia.

Competitors include the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, the South Carolina National Guard, the U.S. Navy Shooting Team, the U.S. Marine Corps Shooting Team, The National Guard Shooting Team, and the U.S. Army Reserve Shooting Team.

The competition is being held at the Calvin A. Lloyd Range Complex at Quantico, hosted by the Marine Corps Combat Development Command.

The shooting kicked off Sunday with an opening shot ceremony and warm-up matches.

Tuesday's competition included the Inter-service Army Match - Prone Slow which was won by Spc. Joseph Hall of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit with a score of 199-9. The Army Reserve's Capt. Samuel Freeman took second place with a score of 198-11.

Freeman won the Inter-Service 600-yard Match later Tuesday with a score of 199-9. Pvt. Todd Mazur of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit took second place with a score of 197-8.

Wednesday's competition included the 1,000-yard Team Match won by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit. The U.S. Marine Corps Team finished second.

Sgt. 1st Class Joel Michalick of U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit took first place in the individual 1,000-yard match with a score of 198-6. The Army Reserve's Kristoffer Friend finished second with a score of 197-7.

Thursday's shooting will be highlighted by the Excellence-in-Competition Rifle Match, which includes 200-yard and 300-yard relays.

Friday's competition will include the Commanding General's Team Match, in which each marksman of the six-member teams fires 10 shots slow while standing at 200 yards, then fires 10 shots rapid fire at 300 yards, followed by 10 shots fired slowly from the prone position, at 600 yards.

One team from each service will go head to head Saturday for the Inter-Service Rifle Team Championship. Sunday's Marine Corps Infantry Trophy Team Match will be followed by an evening awards banquet.
