FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- As the Army continues to draw down its forces and implement budget cuts, there are certain people that play a vital role in making sure everything happens.

Some of those vital people stand out and go above and beyond the call of duty.

Through collaborative efforts, the 1st Sustainment Command (Theater) G8 team received the Outstanding Resource Management Organization Award for fiscal year 2013 during an annual financial management conference held in Seattle, Wash. May 28 to 30.

"There was a lot of collaboration between Fort Bragg and Kuwait, said Michael Kirby, budget analyst for the 1st TSC. "They do similar things if not the same things we do here, but a lot of times on a bigger scale."

The award recognizes the contributions of financial managers below Army command level.

Through joint efforts the 1st TSC G8 team stood up the Joint Acquisition Review Board process in Afghanistan to support the U.S. Forces retrograde and sustainment mission in theater.

"We did a lot of our own work as opposed to pushing it to the higher level," said Kirby. "I think that played a large factor into why we received the award."

In result of these efforts, the team was able to save the Army a total of $1.6 billion while driving $345 million for fiscal year 2013.

"Although small in size, the team makes a huge impact on the split-based operations across the command, said Lt. Col. Racquel Gallman, 1st TSC assistant chief of staff G8. "I'm continually amazed by our ability to bring together a diverse pool of talent every six months and sustain the level of support with no disruption."

The G8 team also stood up a team to conduct required audits, inspections, and created policies and procedures that aligned with the Department of the Army intent for auditable financial statements for the 1st TSC area of responsibility.

"I believe in saving the government money," said Kirby. "I understand that there are requirements, I understand that there are missions, but I also understand that it can be done in an economical way."
