WASHINGTON (July 8, 2014) -- U.S. Army Military District of Washington received the Army Superior Unit Award (ASUA) for meritorious performance of its mission from January 1, 2012 to February 28, 2013 by the Honorable John M. McHugh, Sectary of the Army.

The ASUA was established in 1985 to recognize outstanding meritorious performance of a unit during peacetime of a difficult and challenging mission under extraordinary circumstances.

MDW was presented the award for its coordinated support efforts, to include air, land and maritime defense of the National Capital Region. MDW helped to support the 57th Presidential Inauguration and hurricane Sandy relief efforts.

The command provided logistical planners, a mobile command truck and operations officers and non-commissioned officers in support of the garrison at Fort Hamilton, New York.

This is the third Army Superior Unit Award MDW has received since the start of the War on Terrorism. MDW previously received the award in 2004-2005 and 2008-2009.

To signify that MDW received the award Maj. Gen. Jeffrey S. Buchanan, MDW commanding general, placed the ASUA streamer on the Unit flag during the JFHQ-NCR/MDW its June town hall meeting.

"I'm very proud," said Sgt. Maj. David O. Turnbull, MDW command sergeant major. "It's a great honor to receive this award for all the hard work everyone put in during the inaguration and then to turn around and help out Fort Hamilton during hurricane Sandy, says a lot about the professionals we have here at MDW."
