New Jersey Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno (center) holds a hockey puck with a textured New Jersey Devils professional hockey logo that was created using additive manufacturing techniques as U.S. Rep. Leonard Lance and Assemblywoman BettyLou DeCroce, N.J. 26th District, listen in at Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. on June 30th.

The puck was presented to Guadagno by U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center Chemical Engineer, Giuseppe L. Di Benedetto (far right) who also displayed a variety of objects created from a variety of materials using additive manufacturing techniques.

Di Benedetto had heard that Guadagno was a New Jersey Devils fan and presented the puck as a way to make a point about additive manufacturing -- alternatively known as 3-D priniting. "It was an excellent example of how we could quickly go from a CAD (computer-aided design) drawing to a physical object."

Engineers and scientists from ARDEC are exploring additive manufacturing techniques to produce more capable future armaments and to pave the way for improvements in the way armaments and parts are manufactured.

Guadagno received a the briefing on additive manufacturing during a visit to Picatinny Arsenal yesterday as part of a New Jersey Military Installation Growth and Development Task Force objective over the next few months to tour New Jersey military institutions and talk to businesses impacted by the state's military bases.

Chaired by Guadagno, other task force members who attended the briefing and tour of Picatinny included Adjutant General for the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, Brig. Gen. Michael Cunniff; U.S. Rep. Jim Saxton and Paul Boudreau.

Created by Christie in an executive order on June 13, which states that the military missions are critically important to the state's economy and the nation's safety, the New Jersey Military Installation Growth and Development Task Force was directed to make recommendations to Christie for additional military missions in New Jersey that will preserve, enhance, and strengthen the state's current military installations.

In addition to Picatinny, current New Jersey military missions and installations cited in the executive order include Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey Air National Guard 177th Fighter Wing, Naval Weapons Station Earle, the United States Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, the United States Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City, and the Army National Guard armories around New Jersey.

Picatinny Arsenal is the Joint Center of Excellence for Armaments and Munitions, providing products and services to all branches of the U.S. military. Nestled in the northern New Jersey skylands, our team of 5,000-strong specializes in the research, development, acquisition and lifecycle management of advanced conventional weapon systems and advanced ammunition. Picatinny's portfolio comprises nearly 90 percent of the Army's lethality and all conventional ammunition for joint warfighters.

The Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
