CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait -- The 402nd Army Field Support Brigade provided one of the key players in an international basketball game here May 24.
Tonya Weaver, 402nd AFSB adjutant, played the positions of guard and forward in the Morale, Welfare & Recreation hosted game featuring women from Team Kuwait and Team USA.
Team USA won the game 43 -- 36.
Team USA players were selected through tryouts. The players came from the four teams that participated in a Mother's Day basketball tournament here.
The 402nd AFSB had three players who participated in the tournament, including Weaver, Tiffiney Brooks, and NaTonya Tumblin.
Although the teams from Kuwait and USA have previously played each other twice, this was the first time Weaver played for Team USA. There are plans for them to compete again.
Weaver described her experience of playing on Team USA as "very enjoyable."
"It was quite evident that Team Kuwait had played together for a while and they play with a more European style, aggressive in nature, which made the game very competitive," she said.
Weaver is no rookie when it comes to the game of basketball. She has more than 30 years of experience.
"I started playing basketball at a very young age, around seven years old," she said. "I remember playing basketball in the sand in the front yard with a rim nailed to an oak tree."
She also spoke about boundaries she experienced when she played basketball.
"Because of my religion, when I played basketball, I had to play in dresses," she said. "Because I loved the sport so much, I used to play in my favorite blue skirt until I was able to wear pants."
Weaver played organized basketball for the Conway High School Tigers, Conway, S.C., as a guard and forward. She also played at the collegiate level at Morris College, Sumter, S.C., as a guard.
In 1996, she enlisted in the U.S. Army, where she served nearly 10 years. While in the Army she tried out for the All Army Basketball team. She made it through all of the tryouts, but did not make it to the final roster. In addition, she also tried out for two WNBA teams -- the Washington Mystics and Detroit Shocks.
