Huntsville, Ala. -- Dr. William A. "Bill" Craig, director of the Software Engineering Directorate, was presented with the Government & Industry Leadership Award at the thirteenth annual Leadership Awards Banquet sponsored by the Alabama A&M University Huntsville Progressive Alumni Chapter.

"It was a great honor for me to be recognized among the leaders given awards at the Alabama A&M University ceremony," said Craig. "I am humbled."

A leader at the Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center for over 25 years, Craig was recognized for numerous contributions to his profession and community.

Joel Wise, deputy director for SED said, "Dr. Craig is a visionary leader that inspires and motivates our workforce to exceed our customers' expectations by delivering high quality system and software engineering services and products at a significant lower cost than the industry standard."

Wise has known Craig for over 25 years, first as a customer and later as an employee.

"I have the best job at Redstone Arsenal because I have the privilege of working with Dr. Craig each day," he said.

Craig has enabled significant growth and development in SED, expanding the customer base and facilities. SED provides software and systems engineering support for the Army's major weapon and aviation systems, and is one of only three Life Cycle Software Engineering Centers in the Army.

Under Craig's leadership, SED attained a Level 4 rating of the Software Engineering Institute's Software Capability Maturity Model.

To fulfill its mission, SED collaborates with other Service labs, government agencies, industry and academia, including SMDC for cyber security, Jackson State University for homeland security and the Software Engineering Institute for technology transition. A member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department advisory board at University of Alabama in Huntsville, Craig cultivated a cooperative education program that includes experiential learning for students of the software and systems engineering degree programs.

In addition to the A&M leadership award, Craig has received many honors and citations. These include the Medaris Award from the Tennessee Valley National Defense Industrial Association, an Honorary Doctorate Degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, induction into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame and the Order of Saint Barbara, an honorary military society of the United States Field Artillery.

The Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center is part of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, which has the mission to develop technology and engineering solutions for America's Soldiers.

RDECOM is a major subordinate command of the U.S. Army Materiel Command. AMC is the Army's premier provider of materiel readiness -- technology, acquisition support, materiel development, logistics power projection, and sustainment -- to the total force, across the spectrum of joint military operations. If a Soldier shoots it, drives it, flies it, wears it, eats it or communicates with it, AMC provides it.
