Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender/Pride Month Message

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender/Pride Month. As more of our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well. During Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Pride Month, we celebrate victories that have affirmed freedom and fairness.

LGBT/Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall riots in New York City that took place in June of 1969. The Stonewall riots were a turning point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States where the patrons of the Stonewall Inn staged an uprising to resist the police harassment and persecution to which LGBT Americans were commonly subjected. The uprising marked the beginning of a movement to outlaw discriminatory laws and practices against the LGBT community.

Contributions made by lesbian and gay service members and civil servants have been truly outstanding and the Nation acknowledges these contributions by honoring them this month. Eighth Army benefits from the leadership of LGBT Soldiers, civilians and family members. Their patriotism, loyalty and leadership, coupled with their selfless service, make us stronger. They are making a difference everyday in Eighth Army as we get stronger as a formation. I encourage our personnel to recognize the accomplishments of all members of our workforce and in doing so; we celebrate the significance of diversity in building a brighter future for all citizens.

Eighth Army is strong … and getting stronger!

Pacific Victors!
