Principles that guide the organization was one of the major themes of the recent town hall meeting that was the last for retiring Director Dr. Gerardo Melendez.

The guiding principles initiative is a strategic effort by the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center that aims to maintain the Army's mission and values by engaging the workforce and encouraging its employees to share ideas and suggestions.

Workforce values include duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage.

"My goal is that you can see yourself in these principles," said Melendez, who retires this month. He arrived at Picatinny Arsenal in June 2010. The center's strategic plan is based on four basic principles and practical ways to achieve those goals.

The first step involves innovating superior armament solutions to equip, modernize, and sustain the joint forces. The second step requires ARDEC to shape core competencies that are relevant, cutting edge, and mission focused.

Other steps include continuously improving the enterprise to achieve effective and efficient operations. Also,to foster an enterprise culture by building on trust, empowerment, collaboration and workforce well-being.

Principles comprise the general set of rules that guide the actions of members within the organization, irrespective of changes in its goals, strategies or type of work.

Furthermore, principles reflect the organization's values and deeply-held beliefs as to what behaviors are critical for success. Employees need a clear and complete understanding of how they are expected to act--with each other and with whom they conduct business, employees were told.

Another key message at the town hall was the need to ensure our rates remain competitive. Also, managing the workforce to budget and sustaining lethality ARDEC leaders also said they plan to continue investing in people and facilities.
