The People Enhancing Picatinny team, or PEPPERS team, cheers during the 2014 Teams' Tournament held May 20 at the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) in Picatinny Arsenal, N.J. On the far left is Dr. Gerardo Melendez, director of ARDEC.

The Teams' Tournament started in 1987. It is an annual ARDEC competition, where employees are awarded and recognized for their accomplishments throughout the year. The event is organized by the PEPPERS team, who encourages employees to compete in the tournament and coordinates the award ceremony and prizes.

The tournament is open to all ARDEC employees. Awards are given to first, second, and third place teams in each category. Teams are evaluated by 8 independent judges representing all five ARDEC organizations and Picatinny's Garrison.

This year, thirty-seven teams were nominated for the event. Teams could enter nine different categories, such as community outreach and self-directed work. Teams were then judged based on their team processes (ex: keeping minutes at meetings, doing team training, encouraging creativity, using team-building exercises) as well as the results of their team's work (ex: cost savings, time or manpower savings, increase in quality, etc).

"You've taken the steps to help ARDEC run as an enterprise," said Melendez.
