JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas (May 22, 2014) -- One of the command's most senior contracting leaders is saying farewell after almost 33 years of federal service -- all of those in acquisitions.

Valeria Fisher, who describes her role of director as "serving God, country and the 101st Airborne Division," is retiring this week from the Mission and Installation Contracting Command at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

She has served in a variety of contracting positions over 32 years and seven months years of federal service including clerk typist, purchasing agent, contract administrator, travel charge card program coordinator, contract specialist, procurement analyst and business operations division chief. Fisher spent the last 10 of those years with the MICC as she has seen it evolve from an agency to a new command always posturing to meet the needs of its customers.

"I am constantly impressed with those who are willing to take change and see it as an opportunity for growth," she said.

In 2011 the Lebanon Junction, Kentucky, native was named director of MICC-Fort Campbell, where she has overseen the award of more than 1,300 contract actions totaling more than $95 million in fiscal 2013 alone.

Col. Tony Brown is the 419th Contracting Support Brigade commander at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and is responsible for the oversight of MICC-Fort Campbell.

"Ms. Fisher's quiet demeanor often masked the strong commitment and passion she had for her organization," Brown said. "She is a consummate professional who adroitly balanced the needs of the organization and the needs of supported commands."

Fisher said she will miss most "the fellowship of true professionals" once she retires. It is such camaraderie that fellow command leaders say she embodied every day.

"I truly enjoyed working with Ms. Fisher the past several years. Her passion and commitment to her mission and her organization will be missed," said Tim Tweed, who recently left the 419th CSB for the position as director of the MICC Field Directorate Office at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia.

Fisher's immediate plans for retirement include taking care of her grandchildren in which she hopes to find the same inspiration that has guided her throughout her career.

"Children tend to bring out the creative side of you, so I'm sure they will inspire me for the next new adventure in my life," Fisher said.
