WEST POINT, N.Y. (Army News Service, Sept. 24, 2008) -- A report released last month by Forbes magazine ranked the U.S. Military Academy as the sixth best of all American colleges on the quality of faculty, academics and graduates.
Forbes' list of "America's Best Colleges" named West Point as the "best public college," as well as the most "surprising" top pick, stating West Point may be the finest, yet most undervalued, educational experience in America. The rankings were partly based on data gathered by The Center for College Affordability and Productivity. One-fourth of the weight for the rankings was based on 7 million student evaluations of courses and instructors, as recorded on the Web site RateMyProfessors.com.
Another 25 percent depended on how many of the school's alumni, adjusted for enrollment, were listed among notable people in Who's Who in America.
The other half of the ranking was based equally on three factors: the average amount of student debt at graduation held by those who borrowed, the percentage of students graduating in four years and the number of students or faculty, adjusted for enrollment, who have won nationally competitive awards such as Rhodes Scholarships or Nobel Prizes.
U.S. News & World Report's 2009 edition of "America's Best Colleges, " also released in August, listed West Point as the "best public liberal arts college" in the country.
West Point is considered the 14th overall best liberal arts school in the country of all 265 liberal arts colleges public or private.
The academy also got a top 5 nomination in the category of "undergraduate engineering program."
