DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Davenport mayor, William Gluba, proclaimed the week of May 4 through 10 Military Appreciation Week in a city council meeting at City Hall in Davenport, May 7.
"It's important that we, and all citizens, recognize our veterans and sacrifices made by our military personnel and their families," said Gluba.
Public Safety Committee Chair, Mike Matson, read and moved the proclamation which also asked citizens of Davenport to display the American flag at their homes and businesses throughout the year.
Col. Darren Werner, Army Sustainment Command chief of staff, received the proclamation on behalf of Maj. Gen. John Wharton, ASC commanding general, and Rock Island Arsenal.
"By your recognition, by taking the week out to recognize your military, you represent what makes our community, our nation and our Army strong," said Werner. "Thank you very much."
Active duty military can golf for free on any of Davenport's three golf courses through May 10. They also receive free admission to the Figge Fine Arts Museum for the entire year.
The mayor added that they have named a street "Veterans Memorial Drive" and are currently developing a Veterans Memorial Park.
"It's 43 acres of prime ground on the Mississippi River," he said. "We are trying to show that we are committed to the servicemen and women in this country and this area."
The month of May was designated Military Appreciation Month in 1999 to give the nation the opportunity to publically demonstrate their appreciation for the sacrifices made by service members and their families.
