REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala.--Members of the Army Contracting Command Office of Chief Counsel welcomed guests to their office here May 1 to celebrate Law Day.

The theme for Law Day 2014 was "American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Counts."

"This year's theme focused on the importance of voting, of being an active participant in our government," said Kim Tycer, ACC chief counsel. "We took this opportunity to reach out to all personnel within ACC so that we can know each other better. I am hopeful we achieved our goal of making the attorneys and legal personnel more accessible to everyone within the command."

Established in 1958 by President Eisenhower, Law Day is a nationwide outreach event intended to make America's system of law and justice accessible to the public. Across the nation, attorneys and legal professionals sponsor programs to involve school children and educate the general public on how laws work.

In order to make their office area more approachable, the attorneys set up breakfast stations. Another way they introduced the team to fellow employees was to place "Throwback Thursday" photos on their doors along with current photos. They asked visitors vote for their favorite throwback photo.

"The idea behind the photos, and the event in general, is to let people feel comfortable with us. We want everyone to know who their legal staff is, to know where we sit, and to be able to connect to us," said Katie MacKenzie, the attorney-advisor who planned the event.

With approximately 150 visitors, the idea worked.

"This was a refreshing way to get to know the individuals, along with some of their background," said Donna Brown, a contractor with the ACC Chief Information Officer G-6 Web Presence Team.

Toby Davis won the photo contest by one vote over Kevin Love, proving the Law Day theme that every vote does indeed count.
