Fort Bliss will honor National Hispanic Heritage Month with a celebration Thursday at Soldier Hall.
"This is a very important observance because the Hispanic culture is the largest growing minority in the United States," said Sgt. 1st Class Edmundo Amezcua, the equal opportunity advisor for 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. "It's important to show the contributions Hispanic Americans have made, especially since El Paso has a large Hispanic community. They can see that the military recognizes and has good relationships with Hispanic Americans or anyone of Hispanic descent."
The 4th BCT, 1st AD, is coordinating the event to recognize the Hispanic contributions and influence on American culture. This year's theme is "Getting Involved: Our Families, Our Community, Our Nation."
The featured guest speaker will be Alex Hernandez, director of human resources development at El Paso Community College.
"If you envision an equilateral triangle, it's a symbol of perfection," said Hernandez. "All sides are important and either family, community or the nation can be the base."
Amezcua said because of the diversity in the military, it is imperative for the Army to host events such as this in order to create acceptance and openness while exposing Soldiers to new cultures.
Additional events at the observance will include a fashion show of the traditional costumes worn in several Mexican regions and two bands performing traditional Spanish and Panamanian music and dances.
