BAMBERG, Germany (April 23, 2014) -- Pet owners at U.S. Army Garrison Bamberg have alternatives when it comes to treating their pets.

"Health certificates are the only service still offered at the Bamberg Veterinary Treatment Facility," said Capt. Erica Barkei, chief of the Bavaria Veterinary Branch.

The good news: There is no fee for PCS health certificates. Appointments can be made by calling 0951-300-8201 or DSN 469-8201 or 0951-300-7972.

Owners must bring pet, vaccine records and orders to the appointment, Barkei said. Rabies vaccine must be current to issue a health certificate. Many countries have other, specific requirements. Pet owners can contact the VTF with questions, or see the USDA pet travel website at www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/vs/iregs/animals.

"If pets still need vaccines, blood tests, medications, or services other than a health certificate, owners must go off-post or to another military VTF (e.g. Ansbach, Hohenfels, Vilseck) to obtain these service," Barkei said.

Veterinary records that were not picked up prior to closure will be stored at the Vilseck VTF. Owners staying in Germany can request the Bamberg or Schweinfurt VTF enter their information into the new centralized Remote Online Veterinary Record system.

"This will make registration easier at the new duty station," said Barkei.
