FORT BRAGG, N.C. - As the world makes an effort to "go green," Army lodging is leading the way on Fort Bragg. The launch of Energy Star Operation Change Out is an initiative to replace the current incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lighting bulbs.

CFL bulbs use less energy, last longer, put out less heat, and ultimately save money in energy costs. "At Army lodging, our goal is to change out 6,000 incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent light bulbs," said Virginia Helwig, chief of Army lodging.

This week, Fort Bragg Army lodging came closer to their goal when Progress Energy donated 2,000 CFL light bulbs to the lodging facilities. "On behalf of Progress Energy, we are glad to donate to Fort Bragg. Progress Energy is grateful for the men and women of Fort Bragg. This is just one way for us to say thanks and support Operation Change Out," said Bob Dupuis federal accounts manager for Progress Energy at the change out ceremony.

The donation from Progress Energy was a stepping stone for Fort Bragg Army lodging. Several other Fort Bragg departments are following suit. Picerne Military Housing has plans to change out over 76,000 bulbs in the military housing units to the energy efficient CFL bulbs over the next two years. This effort will save over 62 million kilowatt hours of electricity and greatly reduce carbon dioxide emissions over the lifetime of the bulbs.

Helwig was very pleased with the response from Progress Energy. "On behalf of MWR and Army Lodging, we would like to thank Progress Energy in its support of Fort Bragg and for jumpstarting Operation Change Out," he said While there are a variety of ways to go green, Fort Bragg Army lodging is demonstrating that a simple change out of light bulbs can make a huge difference.
