Guardian Soldiers at Camp Carroll don't just enjoy endurance training during the week; they love it so much they do it on the weekends too…just for fun.

"We had such a positive response to this year's 10-mile ruck march competition," said Modesto
Algarin, Camp Carroll sports, fitness and aquatics director. "There were 46 Soldiers who signed up to compete in the weekend event and even more came out to show their support."

The ruck march, held on March 29 at the Camp Carroll fitness center, required competitors to carry at least 35 pounds of weight on their back as they negotiated hills up to 5 percent in grade.

Finishing the competition in first place with his team was 1st Sgt. Albert Fletcher, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery of the 2-1 Air Defense Artillery Battalion "Guardians."

"We utilize these events to build camaraderie and cohesion within the unit," he said. "It assists us as we all work together to accomplish the mission…and to have a little fun."

Teamwork was also the prime motivation for individual competitors like Sgt. 1st Class Tomekia
White, who completed her march in 1:57:25 earning first place in the female category.

"Even though it was me carrying the ruck and me with the sweat on my brow, I did it to show that I am part of the team," said White.

White and Fletcher are two of nine Soldiers from the Guardian Bn. that placed during the competition.

"It's not always about winning, but winning does feel great," Fletcher said.
