SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii - The skies over Schofield Barracks wept aloha showers as the 8th Theater Sustainment Command family celebrated 423 years of combined military service and bid farewell to 16 retiring Soldiers, Thursday on Hamilton Field.

"This is a time for both thanks and reflection," said Maj. Gen. Stephen Lyons, the 8th TSC commander. "The last several decades represent a critical time in our nation's history."

The combined experience of the Soldiers reflects nearly every type of military operation spanning the past three decades, from the Cold War and peacekeeping missions to combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"They are truly an all-American team that draws its strength from the diversity they represent, and they came together for a unified purpose," Lyons said. "They chose the profession of arms, that of a U.S. Soldier."

He also emphasized the importance of the family members in attendance. "They too have shared in the journey of service to the nation," he said.

Hawaii Sergeant Audie Murphy Club members presented the retirees with their flags, and the ceremony featured formations of troops from 8th TSC's Special Troops Battalion, 8th Military Police Brigade, 130th Engineer Brigade, and 45th Sustainment Brigade.
