TORII STATION, Okinawa, Japan - Soldiers of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 10th Regional Support Group, volunteered their time to help Japanese children get to school safely from March 3-7 as crossing guard in front of U.S. Army Garrison-Okinawa's Torii Station from March 3-7.
Sgt. Terry Hall, a supply sergeant for 10th RSG who hails from Reading, Pa., acted as a crossing guard for three straight mornings in a row.
"I think it's a good thing to help the community out so I try to volunteer my time to assist, especially with the kids. They need a little happiness before they go to school in the morning."
Soldiers stood outside in the rain and cold with reflective vests and flags to ensure drivers were aware of the presence of children in the street.
"It was fun, and a nice thing to do," said Spc. Angela Wilson, an intel analyst for 10th RSG and native of Okinawa, Japan. "It's good for us to be around children every once in a while and help them out."
USAG-Okinawa community relations specialist, Yumiko Uchima of Miyako Island, Japan, coordinated the volunteer opportunity with Furugen Elementary School.
"I was very glad to learn that soldiers came up with this great idea to support the local community. This is a great opportunity for both U.S. soldiers and the people of Yomitan to get to know each other and for Torii Station to become a part of the community."
Uchima was happy to connect HHC, 10th RSG with their local community.
"The school expressed their gratitude for our support and considerations. The children seemed to be surprised to see doldiers at first, but they looked very happy to greet them in English. I believe these little things make a big difference. It helps develop community relations."
HHC, 10th RSG will be performing crossing guard duties for the children of Furugen Elementary School for the first week of every month that school is in session.
