GRAFENWOEHR, Germany --- The Women, Infants and Children Overseas organization, or simply WIC Overseas, is hosting three cooking classes geared toward appeasing picky eaters.

The class, coined "Kids in the Kitchen," lets children ages 2 to 5 wear the chef's hat as they create healthy meals.

Kat Ciamaichelo, a wellness counselor for WIC Overseas, said the class is a way to entice children to try new things, and ease some of the tension families face during mealtimes.

"Often they are only picky in the home," Ciamaichelo said. "When you get them out of the house experimenting with food in new environments, they are willing to try new things."

During the classes, participants will make brainy mashers and sea monster smoothies, all with secret ingredients. Children will then create their own version of the mysterious food.

While the pint-sized cooks get lost in creativity, Ciamaichelo, who is also a registered dietician, will discuss the importance of eating healthy.

"It's only after they tell us how good the recipe is that we reveal it's loaded with yucky fruits and vegetables," joked Ciamaichelo.

The cooking classes are aligned with the mission of WIC Overseas, which aims to provide nutritious food and information to support a healthy diet and lifestyle, along with referrals to health care for income-qualified women and children.

Kids in the Kitchen will be held on the following Wednesdays at the Tower Barracks WIC office, Bldg. 213: March 19, 10 a.m.; April 16, 12:45 p.m.; and May 14, 2 p.m.

The classes are geared toward, but not limited to, members of the WIC Overseas program.

For more information about WIC Overseas or workshops they provide, contact the organization at DSN 475-6821, CIV 09641-83-6821.

Classes are free and registration is not required, however, interested parties are asked to call ahead to ensure adequate supplies are available for each class.
