CAMP ZAMA, Japan (March 10, 2014) -- "Peanuts and pineapples, noses and grapes. Everything comes in different shapes," said Capt Thomas Stowe as he read aloud "The Shapes of Me and Other Stuff" to a class of first-graders during "Read Across America" week, held March 3 through 7 at Arnn Elementary School here.

Read Across America celebrates the birthday of famed children's author Dr. Suess on March 3 and spotlights the joy and importance of reading for children, said Robert Deverick, a teacher at Arnn.

Soldiers, parents and volunteers visited Arnn and the Camp Zama and Sagamihara Family Housing Area Child Development Centers to read aloud to the children there.

"Volunteering our time and being altruistic is part of being a Soldier, and it is important that we engage children to ensure their future success," said Stowe, commander of the Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 78th Signal Battalion.

Arnn students participated in Dr. Seuss-themed events through the week, such as Mustache Monday and Wacky Tacky Wednesday, in honor of the numerous characters created by the author.

Student dressed up as their favorite storybook character costumes on March 7, and paraded around the Arnn cafeteria for teachers, parents and fellow students.
