SCHWEINFURT, Germany (March 6, 2014) -- What does your library offer you? A lot, according to community members here.

"My toddler likes the video games, and I like not having to spend $50," said Chasity Verdejo.

From award-winning service to all the amenities of a community commons, the Ledward Library remains a go-to spot as facilities continue to close in the face of garrison closure set for September 2014.

Schweinfurt's Ledward Library, located at Ledward Barracks, Bldg. 242, will provide access to information and equity of access until its eventual closure June 30.

"Undoubtedly, there will always be paper," said Andrea Koberg, a library technician. "However, with the arrival of the digital age, libraries today are progressive."

The Army Europe Libraries catalog gives DOD cardholders access to scholarly journals, e-books and downloadable audio books. In fact, all U.S. Army garrison libraries in Europe recently modernized their magazine service by replacing print magazines with e-magazines, opening up Internet access to its nearly 470 titles.

And for those with a special title request, Inter-Library Loan is a free service that identifies the desired item allowing patrons to make reservations online and arrange for pick-up at the Ledward Library.

Ledward Library remains community members' source -- and only source at Ledward Barracks -- for a steaming cup of freshly brewed coffee for a nominal fee.

The library also boats such amenities as a community kitchen facility, which remains a community option for hosting parties on-post. It is host to the Schweinfurt Cooking Group, which meets Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. Interested patrons should RSVP to experience culinary cuisine at its finest. RSVPing for the cooking group requires registration through Mightybell.

Parents with students whose mantra is "work hard, play hard:" The library offers students the benefit of studying in a private setting for peace and quiet or conference-style rooms that allow students to actively engage in discussion.

After hitting the books, patrons can reward themselves by kicking back, relaxing and enjoying a respite in the game room. The game room is a wonderful spot to lounge around with friends, or play video games or watch movies -- all available at the library free of charge.

In addition, Ledward Library caters to young minds. Join Children's Story Time Wednesdays at 10 a.m. for a reading of your childhood favorites.

A collaborative spirit is one of the attributes that best characterizes the staff. Readily available to assist, the library staff are open for business.

The Ledward Library is currently open Mondays through Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and U.S. Holidays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed Thursdays.

Effective May 1, Ledward Library will reduce its hours. It will be open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and closed Saturdays and Sundays.

The last day to check out items will be May 30 to allow for book and audio/visual returns. The library officially closes June 30.
