PICATINNY ARSENAL, N.J. - Lt. Col. Christine Allen, Product Manager, Counter Explosive Hazard, reads to children at the Dennis B. O' Brien Elementary School in Rockaway, March 4.

Allen was one of four servicemembers from Picatinny Arsenal who along with local police officers, firemen, and medics participated in a national program known as Read Across America.

Read Across America is a nationwide reading celebration that takes place annually on March 2 -- Dr. Seuss's birthday.

Across the country, thousands of schools, libraries, and community centers participate by bringing together kids, teens, and books.

The program is hosted by the National Education Association. The Dennis B. O' Brien school extended the program to the entire week, with March 4., being "Hero Day."
