FORT BENNING, Ga., (Feb. 26, 2014) -- With recent events such as the hacking of Target to acquire customer information, it's important to protect yourself from identity thieves, said Rosalie Grant-Nolt, Financial Readiness Program manager.

That's why Army Community Service is offering an identity theft class with subject matter experts to protect you and your Family.

The class is noon-2 p.m. March 6 in Building 7 at 7117 Baltzell Avenue.

Representatives from the Georgia Governor's Office of Consumer Protection, Federal Trade Commission, Better Business Bureau and the Internal Revenue Service will be available with information on how to protect yourself and what to do if you are a victim. There will also be a question and answer session.

"Identity theft is so widespread and it's coming at us from so many different angles … they get creative and come out with a new way," Grant-Nolt said.

There are basic ways to protect yourself such as shredding documents and being careful where you put your information on the Internet, she said. But the subject matter experts in the class will give a more in-depth talk, including how to protect yourself during tax season.

Since the class is during lunchtime, Grant-Nolt said to bring your lunch. The class is open to the Fort Benning community but registration is required by Feb. 28. To register, call 706-545-4043. If you can't make the March 6 class, there will be a class Sept. 11.
