WIESBADEN, Germany -- U.S. Army Europe honored three junior officer leaders at the 26th Annual USAREUR-level Gen. Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award ceremony here, Feb. 21.
The winners are:
• Capt. Richard C. Campbell, a native of Hope Mills, N.C., was nominated while serving as a troop commander with 3rd Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment, in Vilseck, Germany.
• Capt. Jonathan C. Nielsen, a native of St. Paul, Neb., was nominated while serving as a company commander for 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), in Vicenza, Italy.
• Chief Warrant Officer 2 John A. Sims, a native of Pensacola, Fla., was nominated while serving with Charlie Company, 2-159th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion out of Illesheim, Germany.
The GDMLA program was introduced in 1987 to recognize company-grade and junior warrant officers who demonstrate MacArthur's ideals of "Duty, Honor, Country," and have a proven record of extraordinary performance, leadership and achievement.
The selection of officers and warrant officers is based on their overall performance throughout the previous calendar year. More than 1,400 company-grade and junior warrant officers across Europe were eligible for this year's award.
USAREUR commanding general Lt. Gen. Donald M. Campbell Jr., the event's host and guest speaker, applauded the hard work and dedication of this year's winners.
"Duty. Honor. Country. These are the very same values we honor here today, epitomized in these fine young leaders that stand before you," Campbell said. "They represent some of the best junior officers from our USAREUR team. These are the leaders that represent these principles on a daily basis."
Capt. Campbell was excited and grateful for receiving this year's award.
"I am happy to be honored with this award," said Nielsen. "I am also honored to be here representing the 173rd, USAREUR and our team."
The three winners will compete against junior leaders from other major Army commands. Only 25 officers and three warrant officers from the active Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve will receive Army-level awards.
