Nye Library offers more than just books

FORT SILL, Okla. (Feb. 6, 2014) -- Nye Library has many recreational and educational resources for families, Soldiers and workers at Fort Sill. The library has 80,000 books, DVDs, CDs and audio books.

The library is at 1640 Randolph Road. Hours of are Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays through Sundays, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The facility is closed on federal holidays.

A military ID or civilian common access card (CAC) is needed to check out movies, books, and audio books.

Books and audio books may be checked out for three weeks and DVDs for one week. The DVD checkout limit is five per person and 10 per family. Each family is allowed to check out one video game at a time.

The children's room contains picture books, beginning chapter books, and juvenile fiction for beginning readers. Children's DVDs and audio books are also available. Children's reading times are on Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m. for kids age 5 and younger.

Nye has a private room with a Wii system and games ready to play, along with a private TV and family room. Play Station 2 and 3 games and Nintendo DS games can be checked out. The young adult room has fiction and nonfiction books, and graphic novels.

Joan Auwen, Nye head librarian, said the library maintains a military reading list that contains books commanders recommend to their troops. The section includes fiction and nonfiction books, and autobiographies.

The library has meeting rooms which may hold 26 people at a time and are used for training such as CPR and first aid.

"We have units come in here and train as well. We have a projector that can be used," said Auwen. Spouses also use the rooms for family readiness group meetings.

Nye library also sponsors events such as puppet shows and the Summer Reading Program.

The library has a special shelf for its "book exchange policy." Anybody is free to take one of these books to read, and in return, must leave one of their own books as a donation.

For anyone interested in learning a foreign language, they can check out the Rosetta Stone language programs, which are available in English, Arabic, French, German and more.
