ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, ILL. -- (Jan. 22, 2014) Improved services and expanded capabilities were on display at the U.S. Army Clinic, Rock Island Arsenal's open house on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

Clinic Officer in Charge Capt. Katherine Converse said the clinic is focused on "Where we're at and where we're going."

She touted a number of improved services at the clinic. "For example, did you know that retirees can no order their eyeglasses here?" she said. "A number of changers are coming -- our goal is to provide quality care, so that every person receives quality care as a part of the military family."

Converse introduced the clinics new medical doctor, Dr. Randel Cardott, who is certified in both emergency medicine and family care.

She said the clinic is a primary care clinic, meaning it must provide referrals for a specialty care. Converse said the referral process can be complex. "A referral can take up to two weeks," she said.

Converse introduced Garrison Command Sgt. Maj. Melissa Judkins, who said expanded staff at the clinic is improving its performance. "The workload is better," she said, and all the staff here care, and they care enough."

Judkins said this was change that Rock Island Arsenal residents should embrace. "Change is good, especially when you make change in the right direction, for the right reason."

Lt. Col. Thomas Hair, Chief, Department of Medicine from Fort Knox, said he had not heard of Rock Island Arsenal when he assumed his current position. "The people I've sent up here have told me, 'this is a gold mine, and we should be investing in it,'" he said.

Hair said that he came to the organization wanting to teach leadership. "I found out I didn't need to teach leadership -- we already had leaders. All I had to do was to go back to the command and be a cheerleader. We needed a prime officer and a sergeant major here, and we have them now -- and we'll be pushing that vision forward."

Guests to the open house were able to learn about Tricare and United Concordia Dental insurance enrollment, the pharmacy, medical and lab services, occupational health, and all other services available at the clinic.
