FORT GORDON, Ga. - (Jan. 10, 2014 ) Park in the wrong place in housing, and you may have to pay a fine.

The Fort Gordon Directorate of Emergency Services and Balfour Beatty Communities put in place a few changes this year to improve parking in post housing.

"Residents can no longer park on the streets in the post housing areas except for life, health, and safety reasons," said Lt. Col. Hollis L. Bush Jr., the director of emergency services. "They must park in their carpool, garage, driveway, designated space, or in the overflow areas."

It addition, it will be illegal to park anywhere on the streets in Lakeview and New Olive Terrace, according to Fort Gordon Chief of Police Willie J. McClinton Jr. "The primary reason we are taking this action is that emergency vehicles must be able to navigate safely when responding to an incident. If vehicles are parked on the streets this does not allow enough room for some of the DES larger emergency vehicles to maneuver and respond safely to a fire or police emergency incident."

These changes will be reflected in the next revision of the U.S. Army Signal Center of Excellence and Fort Gordon 210-3 Regulation, but as of Monday Fort Gordon Law Enforcement officers started issuing written warnings to violators. Citations will be issued after Feb. 7.

Guests of residents will be permitted to use the streets for overflow only, providing there is not an available parking spot in the homeowners' designated parking area, except in Lakeview and New Olive Terrace.

Motor vehicles are to be parked in the garage, in the driveway or in authorized parking areas along the road surface beside the curb. At no time will motor vehicles be allowed to be parked or driven on the grass, according to McClinton. "Any person found in violation will have their vehicle towed," he said.

Vehicles that are parked in a driveway may not block nor hinder the free movement up and down the sidewalks. Motorcycles and mopeds may not be parked on patios, sidewalks or grassy areas.

Residents can report a chronic traffic problem in their neighborhood by contacting the Fort Gordon Georgia Law Enforcement Center, Desk Sergeant at (706) 791-4380. If it is an intermittent in-progress problem, McClinton encourages residents to call dispatch at (706) 791-2681 or 4537 when the violation occurs.
