Command Sergeant Major Alexander M. Peden is a native of Riverton, Wyoming. He entered the Army in June 1987 and attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he graduated from Combat Engineer School. He then attended Special Forces Qualification Course 1-88 and graduated as a Special Operations Engineer in April 1988.

Before resuming his military service, he served two years as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Portugal, where he mastered the culture and the language.

CSM Peden has been assigned to Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha teams 511, 512, 513, 515 and 516. He has more than 14 years of active duty SFODA experience with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, culminating with his service as Troop Sergeant Major for Assault Troop 1, Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th SFG. He was assigned as the noncommissioned officer-in-charge and chief instructor for the Special Forces Advanced Urban Combat Course for the 5th Special Forces Group and trained the Group's Operational Detachments in Close Quarters Battle and Direct Action tactics, techniques and procedures. He has also been assigned to the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School as the Improvised Explosives instructor for the Special Forces Engineer Sergeant (18C) military occupational specialty portion of the Special Forces Qualification Course for three years.

He served as the Special Operations Command-Central Liaison Officer to the United Arab Emirates, serving as the special advisor to the U.S. Ambassador on Special Operations and as the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Defense Attaché and Senior Defense Officer in the UAE.

CSM Peden's education and training includes the Joint Special Operations Forces Senior Enlisted Academy at MacDill Air Force Base, Senior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Warrior Leader Course, Ranger Course, Special Forces Qualification Course, Special Operations Target Interdiction Course, Special Forces Advanced Reconnaissance Target Analysis and Interdiction Techniques Course, Jumpmaster Course, Military Freefall Parachutist Course, and the Advanced Explosives Techniques. He has earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting-Auditing from Campbell University.

CSM Peden has been decorated for Valor on three occasions with two awards of the Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device and one award of the Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device. Additionally, he has been awarded the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Combat Infantryman's Badge, Expert Infantryman's Badge, Military Freefall Parachutist Badge, Master Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, Special Forces Tab, Jordanian Parachutist Badge, German Parachutist Badge and Egyptian Parachutist Badge. He was selected as the 5th Special Forces Group NCO of the Year in 1996.

He is active in the Boy Scouts of America having served as the Scoutmaster and Committee Chairman for Troop 560 in Clarksville, Tennessee.

CSM Peden is married and has eight children.
