YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- Col. Michael E. Masley, commander of U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan continued the traditional annual Christmas Book Reading hour at the Yongsan Library, Dec. 3.

The purpose of the event is for the children to enjoy the seasonal classic, ''Twas the Night Before Christmas,' and also bring the community together in the holiday spirit.

Yongsan Library volunteer Michelle Keier, in charge of the pre-school story hour, said that the children and their parents who attended seemed pleased with the event.

"We love visits like this," Keier said. "It is a huge benefit for the Army community to see their garrison commander getting out and interacting with them. It lets people know that their commander is a very approachable man. Also, the most important thing is that the kids liked what happened today. They were all excited to hear the story."

One of the parents attending the story hour shared how much she and her children enjoyed the Christmas story tradition.

"Thank you very much to library staff members and our commander for giving us an opportunity to experience an event like this on post," said Jiyoung Lee, a military spouse. "Many military family members who do not speak Korean have difficulty finding activities to do as a family outside of the base. My child had a fun time today, and I am satisfied to see that the Army is paying attention to its community members."

Masley has upheld this Christmas tradition since his command began in Summer 2012, and shared his thoughts about it.

"We had a good event today," Masley said. "The aim was to bring the community children in, share some food and maintain a good relationship with each other. Twenty children showed up, and I would definitely like to see and do some more of these events throughout the year, because it has a good impact to the whole community."

The Yongsan Library has numerous holiday themed books and DVDs for checkout by authorized patrons for the whole family to enjoy.
