During a visit to Picatinny Arsenal on Nov. 19, 17 students and three chaperones from North Warren Regional High School learned that science has a role to play, even for Soldiers eating field rations. In the photo, the students prepared their hot lunch of a U.S. Army Soldier rations, known as Meals Ready-to-Eat, using the MRE's chemical heating element.
The purpose of the visit was to learn the role of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the development of armaments for U.S. Army Soldiers.
The students visited several laboratories operated by the Armament Research Development and Engineering Center where they received briefings on gaming, interactive technology & multimedia, 3-D metal printing, Abrams Main Battle Tank and Paladin Self-Propelled Howitzer.
The students also toured ARDEC's Collaboration Innovation Lab and an assembly, integration and multi purpose area known as the High Bay.
The tour was arranged by the Defense Ordnance Technology Consortium's STEM Outreach Program.
