CAMP HUMPHREYS -- U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys hosted its annual Retiree Appreciation Day event Oct. 19 at the Humphreys Community Fitness Center here.

More than 150 retirees attended and were provided with information on various topics relating to health and finance and also met with organizations that cater to those who have retired from the military.

"Today is special because it provides us an opportunity to show our appreciation for everything you've done and continue to do for our community, the Army and our nation," said Col. Darin S. Conkright, Humphreys Garrison commander, during opening remarks.

"Of course, we know that while you may be 'retired' from the military, you have not retired from the community," he said. "In fact, many of the 'retired' faces I see here today continue to work as full time civilian employees on this garrison, or as volunteers who remain active -- both on and off post."

He added that retired Soldiers and their families are truly important to the Army...but especially at places like Camp Humphreys, where we are so far away from 'home.'

The yearly Retiree Appreciation Day is put together by USAG Humphreys and the Area III Retiree Council.

"The primary focus of the RAD is to keep retired Soldiers and their families up-to-date on changes in their retirement rights, benefits, and privileges and to foster good will between the Retired and Active Duty communities," said Charles R. Woods, chairperson of the Area III Retirement Council.

Among the organizations present at the RAD were: the Veteran's Administration, the Noncommissioned Officer Association (NCOA), the Veteran of Foreign Wars, the Humphreys Exchange, Family and MWR, the USO, and medical and dental personnel. The Humphreys Dental Clinic provided checkups/cleanings for 30 retirees at the clinic.

Besides the information booths, the retirees received a meal, various giveaways and entertainment.

One of those organizations present was Army Emergency Relief. They, like many of the other organizations, want retirees to know that they are here for them.

"The Army Emergency Relief Program is for Retirees too," said Barbara Brown, who manages the program under Army Community Services. "A lot of times, they think the Army Emergency Relief is not for them, but we want them to remember that we are here for them… they are not forgotten."

As for the provided meal, Soldiers from the Talon Café prepared the food that was served by volunteers from the Betty L. Simmons Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
