"As a nation, we need to constantly remind ourselves of those who go about their difficult duties of protecting us and keeping us safe. This should be uppermost in the mind of every American."--Congressman Ike Skelton

"I am immensely saddened by the passing of my dear friend, Congressman Ike Skelton.

He inspired our country for more than three decades through his dedication to the defense of our nation and his devotion to public service.

He was a good friend of the U.S. Army and champion of instituting initiatives to support the professional military education of our force. Soldiers, families and Army Civilians benefited tremendously from his commitment to their quality of life.

Our country has lost a great leader and Patriot. His legacy will live on and our hearts and prayers go out to his family."

Under Secretary of the Army Joseph W. Westphal, October 29, 2013
