CAMP HUMPHREYS -- After receiving an interior renovation, the Painted Door Thrift Store located in Bldg. 360, reopened to the community, Oct. 1. The thrift store is operated by the Humphreys United Club, a non-profit service organization for all ID cardholders. Established in 1997, the primary function of the United Club is to manage the thrift shop and return the profits to the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys and Area III communities.

The renovation increased the store size from one room to five. The additional rooms allow for furniture, household items and a consignment room. "Before the renovation, we only had one room for store items and it was kind hard to navigate and see what was what and where everything was," said Lisa Green, the Volunteer Coordinator for the United Club. She said that "she hopes the expansion will bring comfort for the customers' shopping experience."

United Club President Michelle Skells said, "It (the Thrift Shop) was in dire need of a facelift and thanks to our fantastic volunteers, we all put in more than 300 hours over two weeks to create the final product. The Thrift Shop has been doubling its revenue since we reopened and that all goes back into our community through scholarship and welfare grants."

Shopper Liezel Thomas said she prefers the new thrift shop. "I think this (the reopened thrift shop) is better," she said. "We have more room to walk around now, and they have more stuff in the shop, too." While there, she bought shirts, pants and some skirts.

Toni Hutton, another first-day shopper, found some clothes for her three kids. She said that "new thrift shop is more organized, so we can find items easier than before. I come here quite often, to get stuffs for my little guys."

The Thrift Shop is open Tuesdays and Thursdays and the first Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, call 753-7014.
