FORT CARSON, Colo. -- More than 2,000 people braved the cold Tuesday to attend Balfour Beatty's annual resident pumpkin patch.

Besides picking out a pumpkin to take home, children were able to get their faces painted, jump in a bounce house, participate in a smoke house, explore a fire truck, enjoy giveaways and treat themselves to food and beverages. Characters from HellScream Haunted House attended in full costume and makeup.

K.J. Murphy, one of the volunteers for face painting has been dressing up faces for five years, specializing in making monsters and special effects. He is one of the makeup artists for HellScream Haunted House.

Murphy said that the most popular face painting of the day was Batman, sported by many children in several colors. David Giese, 4, and his sister, Maya Giese, 6, were among them, getting their faces painted like Batman. The Gieses were also excited about picking out the perfect pumpkin to take home and decorate.

"This event is so great. It's wonderful to have something right here where the kids can each pick out their own pumpkin to take home," said Karliz Bravo, who attended the pumpkin patch with her mother and three children.

All of the pumpkins were donated anonymously and Fort Carson Boy Scout Troop 164 was on hand to help carry pumpkins to the cars. Despite the temperature, Families were excited to pick out their favorite pumpkins and take part in the festivities.

Fechy Resto and Alondra Santiago, 10, spent some time in the pumpkin patch looking for their ideal pumpkins.

"This has been really fun," Santiago said.

"We couldn't have hosted an event this successful without so much support from the community, the many volunteers who all worked to make this day possible and the many donations," said Kris Spiller, Lifeworks coordinator for Balfour Beatty Communities.
