Schoonover Bowl at Camp Casey reopens after renovation
Six teams took to the field for a 45-minute, unit-level soccer exhibition at the reopening of Schoonover Bowl Oct. 17. The facility was closed during an 11-month renovation.

CAMP RED CLOUD -- When Warrior Country soccer and football teams next vie for victory at Camp Casey's Schoonover Bowl, they'll be playing on a field that boasts all-new synthetic grass, new score boards, fencing and state-of-the-art lighting.

Those are just some of the good-as-new changes made to the decades-old Schoonover Bowl, which reopened Oct. 17 after an11-month renovation.

The Bowl's 400-meter track has also been newly rubberized.

And fans and players will find the rest rooms have been redone and the concrete bleachers repaired and repainted, said Larry Butler, director of Sports, Fitness and Aquatics, with the U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud and Area I's Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

The renovation included installation of a new drainage system.

"The upgrade of the drainage system throughout the facility was a major part of this," said Butler.

The reopening was marked with a ribbon-cutting and cake-cutting ceremony, during which Lt. Col. Edward D. Eldridge, Commander, U.S. Army Garrison Casey, made brief welcoming remarks.

A 45-minute, unit-level soccer exhibition followed.

Because it was already dark when things got started, the stadium's new lights were already on, and Butler was delighted with what he saw.

"Oh, it's great," he said. "The lights are just awesome. Bright."

The renovated Schoonover Bowl will be the venue for two major Area I soccer and flag football competitions this month, Butler said.

The Area I Final Four Soccer Championship is scheduled for Oct. 28 and 29 at 6 p.m.

That'll be followed by the Area I Final Four Flag Football Championship Oct. 30 and 31, also at 6 p.m.

The Schoonover Bowl's hours are the same as those of Camp Casey's Carey Physical Fitness Center: Weekdays, 5:30 a.m. -- 10 p.m.; weekends and holidays, 8 a.m. -- 8 p.m.
