Cpt. Liza Bortz of Weed Army Community Hospital's preventive medicine department administers a flu vaccination to National Training Center's Commanding General, Brig. Gen. Ted Martin. Martin was one of the first Soldiers to be vaccinated at Fort Irwin as part of the Army's seasonal influenza vaccination program. He vowed, "The National Training Center and Fort Irwin will be first to be 100% Active Duty compliant with the FORSCOM mandate!" An Army Surgeon General message to all Army activities on Aug. 6 noted that in the U.S., influenza results in over 25 million reported cases, over 150,000 hospitalizations due to serious complications, and over 30,000 deaths annually.
