YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea --Service members, family members and civilians in Korea rose to be stars to showcase their singing talents during a singing competition at R&R Bar and Grill here, Oct. 4.

U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation hosted the annual Operation Rising Star event to support the Army's commitment to deliver high quality programs for Soldiers and their Families that solidify resilience.

This year, 27 contestants competed to charm the judges and crowd with songs of their choice. Contestants responded with great music by covering selections from country to pop.

"This was my first time ever participating in this type of event," said Maurice Jackson, with Headquarters and Headquarters Company from 1st Signal Brigade. "I really am happy that I participated and enjoyed all of the other contestant performances as well."

After each song, the four judges shared their thoughts on the performances given by the contestants. The winners of the contest were chosen by combining the evaluations of these judges and the ballot votes given by the audience members.

First place winner, Jashemen Palaboa, won a spot to compete in the DA 2013 Operation Rising Star in November back in the states.

"I really appreciate all of the support from my family and friends," Palaboa said. "It felt amazing to have pulled this off and I look forward to doing my best in the finals."

Palaboa will advance to the Army-wide finals competition, which will be broadcast on the Pentagon Channel.

"I love you all and thanks again for everyone that attended and I look forward to your continuous support at the finals," Palaboa said.

Nestie Alvarez, a contestant, was awarded second place and D'Antrese McNeil, a contestant, took home third place. The "Spirit Award" went to the 718th Ordnance Company (EOD), for showing the most motivation and enthusiasm in the audience.
