YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- More than 25 soldiers from U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan participated in the fall session of the biannual Itaewon Clean-up to help its good neighbor, Yongsan-gu, to clear out the trash and litter, Sept. 25.

Located adjacent to the garrison, Itaewon is soldiers' one of the most visited place, thus making the clean-up more significant. Soldiers lined up with many local volunteers from various organizations and armed themselves with brooms and plastic bags.

"I appreciate all volunteers including the USAGY soldiers who showed up today to make (a) clean Itaewon," said Jang-hyun Sung, mayor of Yongsan-gu. "Let us all work together to make Itaewon clean and make it even more charming global attraction."

Soldiers were divided into three groups and started scouring the local pedestrian roads and sidewalks of Itaewon. They cooperated with the local volunteers picking up trash, and the clean-up lasted about an hour.

"Today's clean-up was an exceptional experience," said 1st Sgt. Donna S. Swan, first sergeant from Headquarters and Headquarters Company USAG Yongsan. "It is meaningful that U.S. soldiers and Korean nationals get to do something together to help clean the community. Giving the soldiers a chance to help clean up the area will help strengthen the ROK-US alliance."
