'Air Defenders' sign proclamation
September 26, 2013
OSAN AIR BASE -- Capt. Blake Benedict, commander of Battery C, 6th Battalion, 52nd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, signed a proclamation that commits his Air Defenders to teaching English to the students at a local Korean school here Sept. 12. The school principal, Suh, Yong-Ha, signed on behalf of the Songil Elementary School and welcomed the friendship of the U.S. service members.
"Cold Steel," a Patriot missile battery, is better known for providing air defense on the Korean peninsula, but is dedicated to fostering cooperation and friendship through education and cultural exchange, said Benedict. "I'm very excited about this new partnership," Benedict said. "It's a great thing to get out there, be a part of the community, and show what good neighbors we can be."
The Soldiers will visit the school once a week starting after Chuseok to teach, interact with, and to play with the students, said Benedict. Chuseok is among the most important Korean holidays, where families come together to share food and stories and to give thanks for the abundant harvest, according to the Gateway to Korea website. Chuseok will be celebrated from Sept. 18 - 20.
