GALVESTON, Texas -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District awarded a contract in the amount of $12,747,180 to Dyersburg, Tenn.-based Inland Dredging Company, LLC, for dredging of the Neches River Channel in Jefferson and Orange counties, Texas.
The contractor is required to remove approximately 3,537,000 cubic yards of material from the federal channel and approximately 80,000 cubic yards from the non-federal channel with material being placed in upland confined placement areas.
"This contract will allow us to address critical shoal areas along the approximate 18.6 miles of the Neches River Channel," said Paula Rankin Wise, an operation manager with the USACE Galveston District's Navigation Branch. "The Neches River Channel services the Port of Beaumont, which is ranked sixth in the nation with respect to domestic and foreign cargo, moving approximately 73.7 million tons in 2011."
According to Wise, the Port of Beaumont is classified as one of nation's strategic ports serving as a major outload port for military deployments. Maintenance dredging of the Neches River reach is critical to the industries along the channel, the Port of Beaumont, as well providing support to the military mission.
The job will also include dredging at the Port of Port Arthur which will be funded by the port. Work is scheduled to begin October 2013 with a scheduled completion date of May 2014.
The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 250 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
