KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Serving your country for liberty and freedom is not something everyone can say they do, but for Navy Capt. Karen Young, it is something she has always been interested in. Young, a Pace, Fla., native, is currently serving in Afghanistan as the Warrior Recovery Center clinical director, in Regional Command (South), Kandahar Airfield.

"I was 10 years into my career and I decided to join the Navy Reserve," said Young. "I wanted to serve my country and have an easier way to manage my career, so I did it that way."

For centuries men and women have fought to preserve freedoms, but what is that driving force behind their commitment to serve? Young said "What makes her strong" is the Navy and her family.

"The culture of the Navy and the opportunities I've had allows me to mentor others and carry on the legacy," said Young. "My husband has supported me as a mentor and has helped influence my leadership skills and abilities."

Young's mission involves handling the nursing case management at the WRC. She looks at all the patients who come from the Role 3 Hospital to ensure that they are connected to the proper channels.

"One of the big things I appreciate about the Navy is that it has challenged me as a leader," said Young.
