Schools gain five days due to canceled furloughs

FORT BENNING, Ga., (Aug. 14, 2013) -- In a blink of an eye, furlough days for 10-month employees in the Department of Defense Education Activity are canceled. That means Fort Benning schools are in session for all 180 days.

Christy Cabezas, superintendent for the Georgia and Alabama School District, said the district received a memorandum Aug. 6 from the secretary of defense stating the five furlough days planned for 10-month employees were canceled. All other DoDEA employees still have furlough days -- but those were reduced from 11 to six days.

"The furlough ended up not affecting our instructional days … and we are very thankful for that," Cabezas said. "And even if we did have to do furlough days at the school level -- we were committed to making a plan on how we were going to use the 175 days to get the full curriculum in so students' education wouldn't be sacrificed."

Schools on post began Tuesday. Fort Benning held a Facebook town hall July 31 with many questions centered on the impact of the furloughs on schools.

"Once students (and) parents have had a few weeks in school … they may have questions that they didn't have July 31,"she said.

But at the moment, parents need to make sure they have the updated school calendars, Cabezas said. Calendars with furlough days were given out the day before the memorandum was release -- during each school's sneak-a-peek, she said. New school calendars can be found on the school's websites.
