FORT SILL, Okla.-- The Army is in a transformation process where it is cutting down the force and only top-notch Soldiers will be able to re-enlist and stay in the service.

One of those Soldiers who has proven himself is Spc. David Bergeron, H Battery, 26th Field Artillery (Target Acquisition). As with military tradition, he needed to select a commissioned officer to administer the re-enlistment oath to him June 25. For Bergeron that choice was easy: his wife of five years, 2nd Lt. Ariel Bergeron. The new lieutenant, from Army Accessions Command, is headed to Fort Sam Houston, Texas, for medical officer training.

David has proven to himself and to the Army that he is quality Soldier material by maintaining exemplary physical training scores and service records. This data earned him the privilege of re-enlisting for three more years in the Army.

"When I decided to re-enlist I chose my wife to conduct the oath of re-enlistment because I love her, and she just became a commissioned officer," said David.

Ariel said she was surprised, but excited when her husband requested that she officiate his re-enlistment.

"I told him of course I would do it because I am so proud of him," she said.

Conducting the re-enlistment oath was Ariel's first official act as an officer.

"Dual Army is not easy, it has been hard this whole time," said Ariel. "But, I think if you want to make it work, you need to be ready to fight for it like everything in the Army."

Ariel's first duty assignment will be Fort Benning, Ga. David will soon PCS to Fort Stewart, Ga., a bit up the road at 250 miles from her, but certainly closer than Fort Sill.

"Once she gets to Fort Benning, she will be able to enroll into the married couples program and then I might be able to get relocated if they have an opening for my military occupation specialty," said David.

"If that does not work out then we are going to try and see each other on the weekends and time our leave around the same times," said Ariel.
