Outgoing commander, Lt. Col. John "Muddy" Watters, arrived at Fort Huachuca in August 2010. For the past 24 months, Watters commanded the 305th MI Bn. in training and preparing 5,000-plus Soldiers as they joined the MI Corps.
The presiding official, Col. Richard Monnard, commander, 111th Military Intelligence Brigade, highlighted some of Watters' achievements while serving as commander. "Lieutentant Colonel Watters, his command team, platoon sergeants, instructors and support personnel took a good battalion and made it great," Monnard said. "Muddy, you did an outstanding job, and you and your Family will be sorely missed."
A bouquet of sunflowers was presented to Watters' wife, Scarlett, symbolizing her dedicated service to the Soldiers, civilians, and Family members of the 305th MI Bn., the 111th MI Bde., Fort Huachuca and the Sierra Vista community.
While expressing his appreciation for those who have been involved along the way, Watters reminisced on his arrival at Fort Huachuca during the Monument Fire.
"Twenty four months ago, we gathered for the passing of the battalion colors during a time of peril and uncertainty as the Monument Fire raged in our mountains. Little did I know, it would foreshadow adversity yet to come. The fire has tested the fiber of our post and our community, just as adversity and personal loss has tested the leadership of this battalion. As a team, we have come through the fire and I believe we are better for it," Watters said.
Completing his Army service, Watters and his Family will be moving back to Florida to enjoy retirement. "As I transition to retirement, even though I don't quite know what lies ahead, I've got many friends out there, I've got my gear down and locked, and I am sure the landing will be smooth," he said.
Lt. Col. Adam Boyd, incoming commander, will follow in Watters' footsteps, taking on the responsibility of continuing the development and execution of intelligence analysis, geospatial intelligence and intelligence system maintenance training at Fort Huachuca.
Welcoming Boyd to the team, Monnard said, "Adam, I know you will do well. You are a good leader, a true professional, and ready to take on more and greater responsibilities. Based on what I know, I am certain that you and your team will do great things over the next two years."
Flowers were also presented to Kristen and Olivia, Boyd's wife and daughter, and his son Colin received a token of appreciation.
