  • Spotted on the way to the Doha, Qatar airport. Some in the vehicle wondered what the devices protruding from the wheels of all the taxis might be.  An initial answer was "maybe they're curb feelers..."  Turns out, they are zip-ties - used to keep the wheel covers from flying off while traveling the rough pavement.

  • As the sun rises, July 4, 2008, a U.S. Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter provides aerial coverage of the Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, "Peachtree" 10K Run/Walk.  More than 1,100 runners from the Camp Arifjan community took part in the 5 a.m. race, which is one of several satellite races of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution event conducted by the Atlanta Track Club.  Nearly 2,000 servicemembers were expected to participate in the races at various camps in the Middle East.

  • Sgt. Robert D. Ritchie receives his Operation Freedom Strong Certificate of Reenlistment from Lt. Gen. James J. Lovelace, commanding general, Third Army/U.S. Army Central, at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, July 4, 2008.  Ritchie, an Army reservist, is assigned to Detachment 9, Multifunctional Support Command, which is currently augmenting the 401st Army Field Support Brigade.  Ritchie and 18 other Soldiers had just participated in a group reenlistment ceremony where Lovelace administered the Oath of Enlistment.

  • Heavy mobile equipment mechanics Joyce Westbrook and Calvin Jones perform a technical inspection of a M1117 "Guardian" Armored Security Vehicle, June 18, 2008, at the 401st Army Field Support Brigade ASV Repair Facility, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. Westbrook and Jones, both Department of the Army Civilian employees, deployed to Southwest Asia from Red River Army Depot, Texarkana, Texas. The ASV Repair Facility receives battle-damaged or battle-weary M1117s from U.S. Army units in Iraq or Afghanistan and returns them to operational status.
