FORT BENNING, Ga., (June 19, 2013) -- Fort Benning Soldiers, Family members and civilians, don't be the last one into the Personal Property Shipping Office this peak season. Pack and pick-up dates go very fast in the summer months. Almost 65 percent of all Department of Defense household goods moves are performed during the summer peak season, May 15 through Sept. 30. Pickups during the last few days of the month are always difficult. We expect pickups during the period of June 15 through July 4 to be almost non-existent. That's why it's critical for personnel to be proactive in planning for a move. Moving can be very stressful, however, much of the stress can be avoided through proper planning.

Step 1 -- Planning: Upon receipt of assignment levy and orders, report to the Personal Property Shipping Office as soon as possible with six copies of orders. You should begin the process at least 45 to 60 days prior to your expected pick up dates. Appointments can also be made via telephone through the receptionist at 706-545-4900 in Building 6, Room 105.

Step 2 -- Preparation: Establish a Defense Personal Property System account after your initial visit to the Personal Property Shipping Office. The post website, www.benning.army.mil, is a starting point. Click the tab for Garrison, then click on logistics >Transportation> Personal Property or you can also visit www.move.mil. The website allows you to review household goods planning tools available like the "It's Your Move" pamphlets, front load washer servicing notices, flat screen TV requirements and other useful training and information tools. In addition to offering great information to the service member, members also have the ability to go online and complete their household goods and PPM application and provide to the transportation office.

Step 3 -- Action: First time movers, separatees, retirees and other special category personnel must be counseled at the local personal property office.

Step 4 -- Flexibility: Due to local capacity and scheduling, please be flexible in order to reduce any chance of shipment difficulties.

Step 5 -- Communication: Stay in contact with the transportation service provider and the Personal Property Shipping Office, should circumstances require a change to your pack and pick-up dates. As a reminder, final pack and pick-up dates are not confirmed until the conclusion of the pre-move survey. Be sure to obtain confirmation before making final travel arrangements.

Remember our goal is to ensure that you have the best possible moving experience and a "smooth move." For further assistance, feel free to contact the Personal Property Shipping Office at 706-545-4900.
