MOLINE, Ill. -- The Army Sustainment Command played a big role in the 2013 Midwest Small Business Government Contracting Symposium, highlighting how small businesses can partner with ASC to achieve common goals. The event was held at iWireless Center here May 22-23.

Following the opening ceremony, Brig. Gen. John Wharton, commanding general, Army Sustainment Command, provided an overview of ASC, Army Materiel Command (ASC's higher headquarters) and discussed "Sustaining the Decisive Edge for the Army and Joint Force 2020."

Also on the agenda for Day 1 was Michael Hutchison, deputy to the Commanding General, Army Contracting Command, who discussed "Army Contracting Command Looking Forward: Providing Premier Contracting Support to America's Warfighters."

Day 2 featured ASC "meat and potatoes" topics, including: Enhanced Army Global Logistics Enterprise (EAGLE), Directorates of Logistics (DOL), and Logistics Civil Augmentation Program (LOGCAP) updates.

In the morning session D. Scott Welker, ASC deputy to the commander, teamed up with Col. Dan Reilly, director, installation logistics, Hutchison, and Melanie Johnson, director for field support contracting, to provide ASC EAGLE and DOL advance planning briefings for industry.

In the afternoon, Matthew Sannito, deputy to the executive director, LOGCAP, provided an update on the ever-evolving program.

"Many small businesses assume LOGCAP does not have opportunities for them. In fact, in total dollars provided last year, more went to small businesses than the larger contracts. The catch is we don't solicit small business contracts directly," Sannito said. "Small businesses must work directly with one of the big three companies we have LOGCAP contracts with, and we are glad to facilitate that. There are a lot of opportunities for small businesses to do business with us."

In addition, Carl Cartwright, ASC executive director for field support, discussed requirements for field support.

Next, several members of the ASC senior leadership team gathered for a Senior Executive Service Panel. The moderator was Kathryn Szymanski, ASC chief counsel, and panelists included Welker, Cartwright, Hutchison, and Sannito.

The event was hosted by the Iowa/Illinois Chapter of the National Defense Industrial Association and was sponsored by the Quad Cities Chamber. More than 500 attendees and 100 exhibitors participated in the event.
