FORT SILL, Okla. (May 23, 2013) -- Corvias Military Living is trying to get at the heart of what residents want. They might have found it with the new Southern Plains Community Center on Geronimo Road, which opened May 20. Residents and community leaders joined for a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate.

"I put on the uniform in 1982, lived [in] on post housing for 22 of 27 years we never had anything like this," said Joe Gallagher Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill deputy to the commanding general. "I'm living on post now and I can attest to the quality that Corvias provides in their service and their responses."

The new facility offers on-post residents free amenities that include a computer lab, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, fitness center with attached playroom for children, computer lab, University of Oklahoma versus Oklahoma State University themed video lounge, Grand Ole Opry Clubroom, multipurpose room and full kitchen.

"This is all free to our families, they deserve this. They go through a lot every day," said LeiAnn Palmer, maintenance resident service specialist.

The neighborhood center is the first on Fort Sill with two more to be built in the other neighborhoods. The amenities came from the wants of the residents here with input from the employees.

"Fort Sill is really lucky enough to have a neighborhood center that really reflects the community. This is a reflection of what the families wanted," said Michael Steiner, Corvias Military Living managing director.

The layout of the building is very purposeful. One feature that may really draw residents is the full size gym with attached playroom. The machines are facing the playroom so parents can watch their children while they work out. Double doors are always closed so the little ones can't sneak off and there is a family restroom inside the gym as well.

The center can also be rented out for parties or for other things such as family readiness group meetings. If someone feels the need to sing, they're also covered.

"Since we're the Southern Plains Team they asked 'what do you want to see' and we were like 'karaoke!' We love karaoke. So we're actually the first Corvias neighborhood center to have karaoke," said Palmer.

The right side of the center is full of Corvias offices staffed to take care of the residents needs from moving in to moving out, work orders, and everything in between.

"This is not your grandfather's Army. It's brand new and it's really about looking forward and having sustainable homes. This isn't just come in quickly, renovate, build new and then we're going to move on. This is a sustainable program that continues to give back for the duration of our commitment to the army, for 50 years," said Steiner.
