FORWARD OPERATING BASE SHANK, Afghanistan -- Soldiers with 1st Battalion, 76th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Third Infantry Division, fire the M777 Howitzer with a Precision Guided Kit, April 28. The PGK for the 155mm weapon system is manufactured by Alliant Techsystems Inc., and is a relatively inexpensive GPS-guided fuze that can be attached to the nose of a traditional howitzer round. The rounds become significantly more accurate because of four steering fins. More accuracy means less collateral damage and lower risk of friendly or civilian casualties.
